Dried Figs: a short introduction

Figs are a fruit that come from the ficus tree (part of the mulberry family) – one of the world’s oldest trees and mentioned in some of the earliest historical documents and even features prominently in the Bible. Native to the Middle East and Mediterranean, figs were treasured by the Greeks, to the extent that laws were once created to prevent them being exported.

They are renowned for their unique, sweet taste and soft, chewy texture. As figs are delicate and perish relatively quickly, they are dried in order to preserve them. This results in a sweet, nutritious, dried fruit that can be enjoyed the world over – at any time of year.

NUTRITIONAL FACTS

Dried figs belong to the dried fruit family and are a super nutritious choice available all year round. They are a rich source of natural fiber, which contributes to good bowel function, and are often recommended as a solution to constipation. Furthermore, they are rich in valuable micronutrients, such as potassium, which helps to regulate blood pressure, and calcium, a highly important mineral, as it contributes to the good function of bones and the neuromuscular system. Dried figs also contain magnesium and iron, while they have high levels of antioxidants, which protect the heart and help reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
