Dried Papaya: a short introduction
Dried papaya is the dehydrated form of the exotic papaya fruit, originating from Mexico and central America. It is also known as papaw or pawpaw, and is a sweet tropical fruit with an obscure origin. It is thought to be a fusion of two species of Carica, found in Mexico and Central America. Today, papaya is cultivated throughout the tropics and subtropics.
In many places, papaya is a popular breakfast fruit and is also used in many recipes, including salads, pies, juices, desserts and sweets.
Dried papaya concentrates the exotic sweet taste and is naturally rich in dietary fiber, antioxidants, and beta-carotene.
NUTRITIONAL FACTS
Dried papaya belongs to the dried fruit family and is rich in nutrients, such as B complex vitamins, vitamin C and A, soluble fiber, zinc, copper, magnesium, calcium and iron. It also contains high amounts of carotenoids, which provide its bright orange color.
The enzymes it contains contribute to the removal of dead cells from the skin, leaving it fresh and glowing. The antioxidants it contains act against oxidative stress and premature ageing. Papaya also contains an enzyme, papain, which helps digestion and prevents constipation, while its natural fiber helps reduce cholesterol levels.
The consumption of papaya also reduces the risk of chronic diseases, such as cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary heart disease and other cardiovascular diseases.
