The Many Uses of Hazelnuts
With the impact of the Turkish Lira crisis finally easing, there has been much activity in the market about possible future issues. While the Turkish central bank has yet to report just how the currency depreciation affected the economy, hazelnut suppliers have only just recovered from the intensely volatile market conditions they found themselves in.
The market has now calmed down enough to look at more interesting developments about hazelnuts. As the world becomes more health-conscious, we have seen an increase in the consumption of hazelnuts for a multitude of reasons.
Replacement for Sugar
As we enter a new era of health-consciousness, we see an increase in companies cutting down on sugar. The latest to jump onboard is B.T. Sweet which launched "CAMBYA"- a plant-based alternative to help manufacturers create tasty hazelnut and chocolate spreads with less sugar.
B.T. Sweets offer sweet spread, filling, and coating to meet sugar-reduction targets without compromising quality and flavour.
Hazelnut Shells as Sustainable Panels
After they've been harvested, the hazelnut's shell, which is a hard, thin, slow-decaying husk, is almost immediately discarded. However, a team of scientists at the Washington State University have found a new way to upcycle leftover hazelnut shells into durable panels for cabinets, tables, and other products.
The team collaborates with manufacturers to share ideas and create new techniques. Funded by the National Institute for Food and Agriculture's Small Business Innovation Research Program, this project is set to finish by Winter 2022 to help us enter an era of sustainable furnishing to lower the cost of disposal and the burden of decomposition on our environment.
