flax Seeds: a short introduction
Flax is a plant of the Linaceae family. It is cultivated both for its fiber (from which we can make linen yarn and fabric) and for flax seed (or linseed) from which linseed oil is extracted. Knotted flax fibers were found in the Dzudzuana Cave, in the foothills of the Caucasus, dated to over 30,000 years ago. Today, as a health food, flaxseed continues to grow in popularity, as major producers around the world include China, Russia and Canada.

Flax seeds have real super food properties, thanks to their high levels of beneficial nutrients. Their key characteristic is their high content of omega-3 (“good”) fatty acids, mainly in the form of alpha linoleic acid. These fats are necessary for the body and are currently associated with benefits for the heart and vessels, the brain, anti-inflammatory properties and more.
At the same time, flax seeds are an excellent source of natural fiber, manganese, folic acid, vitamin B6, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus and copper. The natural fiber in flax seeds reduces the level of cholesterol in the blood, regulates glucose levels, promotes colon health and acts against constipation.
Recent research has shown that the high levels of omega-3 fatty acids and lignans (phytoestrogens, known for their antioxidant properties) in flax seeds can significantly reduce the growth of tumors in prostate cancer patients. Moreover, the antioxidants in flax seeds mitigate the symptoms of inflammatory diseases (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis).
