Pistachio Market Update April 2022 Week 17
It has been reported that the frost has severely damaged the pistachio crop in the Kerman province. Unfortunately, this province is where most of the Iranian pistachio crop is grown. The situation has taken farmers by surprise.
The second half of March was relatively warmer than usual, but then in the last five days of the month, the temperature dropped suddenly. Even though they did their best to protect their crops, all efforts proved to be useless.
However, traders claim that enough action to protect the crops had not been taken. They say that local meteorologists had already issued a yellow warning.
So far, it has been reported that 75% of all gardens witnessed at least 30% of the damage in the Rafsanjan, Anar and Zarand, and Shahr-e Babak, Sirjan and Kerman counties.
Farmers from the Anar country have already let it be known that their crops have been destroyed. This will obviously impact the export supplies for the Kalle Ghuchi, Ahmad Aghaei and Fandoghi varieties of pistachios.
What to Expect From This Situation?
The situation in Kerman has serious implications for the local economy. Since the province depends on the pistachio crop, in the coming months, there is no doubt that it will have serious economic repercussions for the region. It is expected that this situation may lead to Iran losing some valuable market shares this year.
Yet, it is important to note that while frost damages rose prices at the beginning of April, the market has been quite stable in the past two weeks, with the demand and supply balanced quite well.
