Brown sugar: a short introduction
Brown sugar is mainly produced from sugar beet or sugar cane. Following specialized procedures, sugar beets are squeezed to extract their natural juice. Then the juice is boiled until thick and sugar crystals are created. These crystals are rich in a brown sticky substance which is called molasses. Therefore, it differs from white sugar because it contains molasses. It is softer and aromatic, but it yields the same calories as white sugar (about twenty per teaspoon). Brown sugar is produced by countries with a tropical climate, such as China, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Korea Selatan, Bolivia, Brazil and Indonesia.
NUTRITIONAL FACTS
Molasses are rich in zinc, potassium, copper, iron, B-complex vitamins and antioxidants. A percentage of these nutrients also appears in the brown sugar containing molasses. Unlike white sugar, brown sugar is raw and does not contain chemicals. It has essential minerals that the body needs and even the potassium in the molasses seems to reduce period cramps. It is beneficial for the skin and is an important ingredient in many skin care products. Lastly, brown sugar instantly boosts energy levels and is considered beneficial for the digestive system.
